What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Patrick Reed at The 2014 WGC-Cadillac Championship - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

DORAL, Fla. — The first indication that Patrick Reed has an air of cockiness — and doesn’t care if anyone doesn’t like it — was his choice of Sunday colors: red shirt, black slacks, right out of Tiger Woods’ closet.

The second was his golf game, which was put on full display under the klieg lights of a World Golf Championship stage on a beefed-up Blue Monster on Sunday. At 23, he is now the youngest winner of a WGC event ever, having coasted to the Cadillac Championship with a final round of even-par 72 (4-under 284 overall) for his third tournament win. And yes, that’s three tournament wins before he’s even played in his first major. That doesn’t leave much room for modesty.

“I’m one of the top five players in the world,” he said in his TV interview after his one-shot win over Bubba Watson (68) and Jamie Donaldson (70). “I’ve worked so hard, won a lot in junior career, did great things in amateur career and now I have three wins on the PGA Tour. I just don’t see a lot of guys that have done that besides from Tiger Woods, of course, and all the legends of the game. To come out in a field like this and to hold on wire-to-wire, I feel like I’ve proven myself.”

The bold claim — somewhat softened in his media center interview — was already causing quite a stir in the understated golf world. But there is no denying that Reed has had a meteoric rise in about 12 months’ time. The win boosted Reed into the No. 20 spot in the World Rankings and almost assures him of a spot on Tom Watson’s Ryder Cup roster.

And Watson would have to appreciate how Reed came out of the gate with a hot putter. Starting the day with a one-shot lead, he birdied three of the first four holes and never had anyone make a run at him. It wasn’t until he bogeyed No. 14 that he felt any pressure and it wasn’t until Jamie Donaldson birdied the 17th in the group ahead that his lead was anything less than two.

But Donaldson couldn’t handle the 18th. After watching playing partner Miguel Angel Jimenez’s ball kick into the water after hitting the green, Donaldson bailed out with a 4-iron into the right bunker. He failed to get up-and-down and Reed, with a two-shot lead again, was able to play for bogey with a 3-iron off the tee and a lay-up short of the green. He pitched on, two-putted for 72, fist-pumped and hugged his pregnant wife and regular caddie, Justine. Just another routine win.

Anyone aware of Reed's background was probably expecting him to hold up. This is a guy who won two NCAA championships at Augusta State, never losing a match. He passed up his senior year to turn pro and was trying to get into PGA Tour events as a Monday qualifier. At the end of the 2012 season, he made it through the pressure of Q School on the number. And in his first two PGA Tour wins, he held on to 54-hole leads.

“Very calm but killer. He’s got that killer instinct,” said his temporary caddie, Kessler Karain, who has been on his bag subbing for his sister. “You would think with all that pressure a lot of people would cave. He doesn’t cave.”

“I was just a huge ball of nerves compared to him,” said Justine, who walked outside the ropes. “I would look at him and he’s cool as a cucumber and I'm just sitting out there going nuts.”

“It comes from winning,” Reed said. “The two wins before this event, and then being 54-hole leader, wire-to-wire, win this event, doing all those things I've done in the Monday qualifiers. Especially in Q School when we were in 130-something after two rounds and to shoot 18-under the last four days to get in. . . all that just kind of builds up and you know that you can put four rounds together. It’s just ... kind of, keep on going.”

And the red shirt?

“Well, the best player ever to live when I was growing up wore black pants, a red shirt,” he said. “I was growing up watching him. I always thought, you know, it would be cool to wear black and red and come down (the stretch on) Sunday. I did it when I was in juniors, I did it in amateur golf, and it’s worked. Obviously there’s something behind it.”

Cockiness? He’s got an entire career to back it up.
