What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Matt Kuchar at The 2013 Memorial Tournament - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

DUBLIN, Ohio First Scott Stallings came after him. Then Kyle Stanley got into his grill. And Kevin Chappell made things interesting with a late charge.

No matter. Matt Kuchar didn't flinch.

Kuchar and his steady ways joined Tiger Woods as the only multiple winners on the PGA Tour this year with an authoritative final-round, 4-under-par 68 Sunday to win the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village.

And now it's Kuchar, not Woods, who is the hottest player in golf heading into the U.S. Open in two weeks.

Kuchar, who won the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship earlier this year and finished in solo second last week in the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, will rise to No. 4 in the world rankings when they are released Monday. He shook tournament founder Jack Nicklaus' hand after wrapping up the victory with a 21-foot putt for birdie on the final hole to finish at 12-under 276 to beat Chappell (68) by two shots, Stanley (71) by five and Stallings (67) and Bill Haas (71) by six.

"This stuff never gets old," a beaming Kuchar said as his sons, Cameron and Carson, were in his arms. "To shake Mr. Nicklaus' hand, to win the tournament, that's pretty great. But to have my family run onto the green, this is as special as it gets."

World No. 1 Woods, on the other hand, didn't do anything special as he finished 20 strokes behind in a tie for 65th. His third-round 79 included a 44 on his first nine holes, the worst nine-hole score of his career. While Woods said he putted poorly all week, he isn't worried about the state of his game entering the U.S. Open, where he'll try to end his major drought and win his first since capturing the 2008 U.S. Open.

"It happens," Woods said in summation of a week where he finished just two strokes below his all-time worst score over 72 holes. Woods, who had won three of his last four starts and four overall this year, finished 40th or worse for only the 12th time in his career. "It happens to us all. And I'll go home next week and practice."

Rory McIlroy also was never a factor, finishing tied for 57th at 6 over.

Kuchar began the day with a two-shot lead and extended it to three with a first-hole birdie. But Stallings ripped off five birdies in a row and got within two shots before fading. Stanley then was next to make a run at Kuchar and got within one with a birdie on the ninth, but a bogey on the 11th coupled with Kuchar's birdie set the deficit at three. Chappell, who made pars on his first 12 holes, birdied four of his final six, including a tap-in on the last hole when he nearly holed out from the fairway.

"There at the end it got scary," Kuchar said. "Kevin made a great run, and Kyle played well, too."

"He's not going to give you much. You've got to go get it," Chappell said of the difficulty in chasing Kuchar. "This isn't a golf course where you can force the issue too much. Yeah, I was fortunate to get as close as I did."

Kuchar, who has a PGA Tour-leading 35 top-10s since the start of the 2010 season and won The Players Championship last year, will see Merion for the first time on Tuesday. He has five top-10s in majors, with three of those coming in his last five starts, but is winless in the game's four biggest events.

"Winning tournaments breeds more winning tournaments. Anytime you can get comfortable playing in that final group, finishing off a tournament, winning a tournament is a huge amount of confidence," Kuchar said. "I think last week was helpful playing in the last group at Colonial. I played some good, steady golf, not quite good enough. But having that opportunity again the very next week, I felt good out there. I knew my game was in good shape and was a lot more comfortable in the situation.

"Heading into Merion, I'll have a lot of confidence. It's a course I've not seen before, so I'll have to do some learning. But from what I understand you've got to drive it well, as you do in a U.S. Open, and I feel like I've been really driving the ball well. I'm looking forward to my chances there at Merion."
