What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Hideki Matsuyama at The 2014 Memorial Tournament - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

COLUMBUS, Ohio- World No.1 Adam Scott was left to rue a costly double bogey and some rotten luck as Japanese young gun Hideki Matsuyama claimed his first US PGA tour victory with a playoff win over American Kevin Na in the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village.

Matsuyama, who was Scott's Presidents Cup teammate at the venue late last year, became the youngest winner of the tournament hosted by legend Jack Nicklaus at just 22 when a par on the first hole of sudden death was enough.

"This is a dream come true to win here at Mr Nicklaus' golf course. I couldn't be happier," Matsuyama said.

In a wild finish Matsuyama birdied the final hole of regulation to post a final round three-under 69, giving him a 13-under-par total.

Na had earlier put together a blistering bogey-free eight-under 64 and watched for nearly two hours from the clubhouse as Matsuyama, Scott and overnight leader Bubba Watson frittered away chances to win outright.

Playing the 18th in sudden death Matsuyama was forced to use his three-wood after breaking his driver in frustration on the 72nd hole and while he found a fairway bunker, Na failed to take advantage when he drove his ball into a creek.

When Matsuyama made a 10-foot par putt the trophy was his.

Watson (72) was third at 12-under with Scott (71) tied fourth with American Chris Kirk (68) at 10-under.

Starting three shots off the lead, Scott rattled off three straight birdies on holes three, four and five before burying another one on the seventh to surge to 13-under par at the turn.

Despite almost driving his ball out of bounds on the par five 11th, the 33-year-old recovered to make a 25-foot birdie putt, sending him into a tie for the lead for the first time.

But just as quickly it went awry.

He pushed his tee ball on the par-three 12th right and it plugged in a side hill just centimetres from water and inside the hazard line, forcing him to take a penalty drop.

By the time Scott was in the hole for a double bogey he was three off the pace.

A bounce back birdie returned some hope to his tilt but his approach to the 14th was long and plugged into a bunker.

He couldn't get the first shot out of the sand and carded a bogey, repeating the dose on the 15th and 16th to slip completely out of contention.

Aaron Baddeley made a run at a high finish when he was six-under on his round through 12 holes but dropped six shots over the last six to shoot even-par 72 and finish on three-under.

He was joined there by Jason Day (74) and Marc Leishman (73) as the next best Australians in a tie for 37th. Greg Chalmers (75) rounded out the Australians in a tie for 72nd at five-over.
