It's only November but it seems like most of the major golf equipment manufacturers are either launching their 2015 club now or are providing sneak previews of what is coming in early 2015. January 6, 2014 By David K

KAPALUA, Hawaii — Zach Johnson started the new year the same way he ended the last one. Johnson pulled away with three straight birdies on the back nine at Kapalua and closed with a 7-under-par 66 for a one-shot victory over Jordan Spieth in the Tournament of Champions on Monday.

Johnson didn’t need any heroics, like holing out from a drop zone on the last hole when he beat Tiger Woods in the World Challenge last month in California. This was mainly about chipping and putting, and Johnson is among the best. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

Sneak Preview of New 2014 Golf Clubs - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

November 15, 2013 By Kevin L

It's only November but it seems like most of the major golf equipment manufacturers are either launching their 2014 club now or are providing sneak previews of what is coming in early 2014. I understand the reason for the November launch is to take advantage of the Holiday buying window but for those of us who live in Northern climates, it means hitting the new clubs off mats into a net until the snow melts away.

For those that are looking at possibly replacing some gear in 2014 here is a break down so far, by manufacturer, of their 2014 lineup: ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

Johnson played the last six holes in five under par at Sheshan International Golf Club to card a closing 66 and finish 24 under par, three ahead of the defending champion Ian Poulter.

All three members of the final group of Johnson, Poulter and Graeme McDowell shot 66, meaning Poulter finished one ahead of his Ryder Cup team-mate McDowell, with Spain's Sergio García two shots behind in fourth after a closing 63. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag:Webb Simpson at The 2013 Shriners Hospital for Children Open Tournament - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

October 21, 2013 By Mike L

Only one person was going to beat Webb Simpson on Sunday in the final round of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Himself.

And with a six-stroke lead with nine holes to play at TPC Summerlin, Simpson wasn’t about to let that happen. The 28-year-old native of Raleigh, N.C., played the back nine smart and safe and posted a final-round 5-under-par 66 for a 24-under 260 total.

That was good for a six-stroke victory over Jason Bohn and Ryo Ishikawa for Simpson, who won for the first time since the 2012 U.S. Open. In the process, he tied the tournament record for scoring over 72 holes set by Ryan Moore in 2012 and made $1,080,00.

“I feel like I’ve gotten better; I just haven’t gotten a win,” Simpson said. “My one thought and goal for (Sunday) was I wanted to come out and play aggressive and keep making birdies, but play smart and somehow try to gauge how the golf course was playing to determine whether guys were shooting low or not.” ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

October 13, 2013 By Mike L

San Martin, Calif. Jimmy Walker finally won on the PGA Tour in his eighth year and 188th tournament, and with a little help from Brooks Koepka.

Tied for the lead with four holes to play Sunday, Walker rolled in a 6-foot birdie putt on the 15th hole to take the lead for good in the Frys.com Open. Three closing pars for a 5-under 66 turned out to be more than enough for the 34-year-old Texan to take home a trophy and plenty of perks.

Walker is going to the Masters for the first time, along with a trip to Maui for the Tournament of Championship. He also cracked the top 50 for the first time in his career.

"I think it will sink in after a while," Walker said. "Relief right now. It feels really good. I’m pretty excited." ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

Our Picks For The Top Fairway Woods - 2013 - Great Golf Deals Blog

September 24, 2013 By David D

We are past the unofficial end of summer (Labor Day) and it's time to offer our humble opinion on the Top Fairway Woods For 2013. The selection team for this list consist of 8 full-time club sales people that have at least 3 years experience in the golf industry and our most experienced rep has over 20 years of club sales experience. We are not golf professionals and do not have any affiliation with any of the equipment manufacturers. We are just regular golfers with handicaps that range from scratch to 25 that because of where we work get a chance to play with and test all the latest golf equipment. We also get a chance to talk to a lot of customers to get their feedback on the equipment and that also factors into the selection.

The fairway woods often gets overlooked because golfers always focus their attention on new drivers with the latest technology or even the ever easier to hit hybrids clubs. Next time you look at a golfer's golf bag more than likely what you will see is probably a fairly recent driver (1-3 years old) and some new hybrid clubs replacing the long irons. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Henrik Stenson at The 2013 Deutsche Bank Championship - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

September 2, 2013 By Kevin L

NORTON, Mass. -- A great summer of golf finally paid off for Henrik Stenson.

Stenson made three straight birdies to race by a fast-fading Sergio Garcia, and he holed a bunker shot for birdie on the 17th hole to turn back a final threat from Steve Stricker and win the Deutsche Bank Championship. Stenson was runner-up in the British Open and a World Golf Championship, and he tied for third at the PGA Championship. All that was missing was a trophy, and he took care of that on Labor Day at the soggy TPC Boston by closing with a 5-under 66 for a two-shot win over Stricker. What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Adam Scott at The 2013 Barclays - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

August 25, 2013 By Kevin L

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Masters champion Adam Scott didn't think his good round was good enough Sunday at the Barclays.

His caddie had already packed his golf clubs into a travel case. He viewed his visit to the CBS Sports tower as nothing more than a courtesy. His only hope was that the other players still on the course -- Tiger Woods and Justin Rose among them -- might find it as difficult to close out a victory as Scott has over the years.

"I'm pretty shocked," Scott said after his 5-under 66 gave him a one-shot win at Liberty National. "There were so many guys out there with a chance and I really didn't think I had much of a chance. If you hang around the lead long enough, you're going to win some, you're going to lose some. And this one went my way." ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Patrick Reed at The 2013 Wyndham Championship - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

August 18, 2013 By Steve L

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- In the span of a couple of strokes, Patrick Reed went from almost certain disaster to his first PGA Tour victory.

Reed won the Wyndham Championship on Sunday for his first title, beating Jordan Spieth with a most improbable birdie on the second hole of a playoff.

Reed recovered from a drive on the par-4 10th that came a few feet from going out of bounds and stopped in some pine needles in the woods near a television cable.

Reed pulled out his 7-iron, uncorked a baseball swing from an uphill lie and sent the ball under a tree branch -- yet away from the tree trunk -- to land his second shot 7 feet from the pin.

"It was the best shot of my life, that's for sure," Reed said. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Jason Dufner at The 2013 PGA Championship - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

August 11, 2013 By Larry D.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Looking unruffled throughout an unhurried walk in Sunday's final round of the 95th PGA Championship, Jason Dufner, who earlier this year sparked a movement that became known as Dufnering, now is in possession of the Wanamaker Trophy.

Unperturbed by charges made by others and untroubled by the exigent East Course at Oak Hill Country Club, Dufner won the final major of the season with a lethal combination of pars and tap-in birdies.

Trailing by one at the start of the day, Dufner took the lead for good on No. 8 and shot 2-under-par 68 to finish at 10 under par to win by two over Jim Furyk.

After holing his final putt, Dufner celebrated the third win of his career with a muted double-fist pump to the sky, politely took his hat off to shake Furyk's hand, and then gently patted his wife, Amanda, on the rear end before hugging her. A few minutes later he hoisted the heavy silver Wanamaker Trophy to the sky and gave it a few kisses. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Tiger Woods at The 2013 WGC Bridgestone Invitational - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

August 4, 2013 By David D.

AKRON, Ohio -- Forget the other 72 players in the Bridgestone Invitational field. They never had a chance. Tiger Woods probably even overshadowed the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction weekend in nearby Canton once he put the nation's cable networks on 59 Watch Friday and subsequently posted what would have to be called a disappointing 61, if there is such a thing.

This weekend at vaunted Firestone Country Club was a good reminder of just how big Tiger Woods is, just how big he is when he wins and just how close we are to a full-fledged return of TigerMania at any given moment. Tiger matters. More than anyone else in golf, Tiger matters. All Tiger all the time, it's more than just a saying. It's our reality.

"It's always interesting to see how when Tiger Woods gets a big lead, he gets a bigger audience," PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said Sunday during a press conference to announce a four-year extension of Bridgestone's tournament sponsorship. "People want to see how big the lead can be. As I was coming in here from the airport this morning, I was told that I should expect to be delayed because of the great crowds. That's the bad news I always like to hear." ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

Kandi Mahan gave birth to daughter Zoe Olivia early Sunday in Texas. ''Zoe will be getting a very nice baby gift from me,'' Snedeker said. ''I can't thank Kandi enough for going into labor early. I don't know if I'd be sitting here if she hadn't. But that is a way more important thing than a golf tournament. What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Phil Mickelson at The 2013 Open Championship - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

July 21, 2013 By Kevin L.

GULLANE, Scotland – Instead of another excruciating loss in a major championship, Phil Mickelson got a chance to celebrate early.

A brilliant closing round at challenging Muirfield made it possible.

Mickelson won the claret jug for the first time and his fifth major championship with a 5-under 66 on Sunday, matching the best round of the tournament on a day when the other contenders -- including Tiger Woods -- faded away.

Lefty birdied four of the last six holes, winning by three strokes and emphatically erasing the memory of all those close calls that didn't go his way -- the latest one just last month when he was runner-up at the U.S. Open for a staggering sixth time.

"This is such an accomplishment for me," Mickelson said. "I never knew if I'd be able to develop the game and the shots to play links golf effectively. To play what is arguably the best round of my career, to putt the way I putted, to shoot the round of my life, it just feels amazing to win the claret jug." ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

July 14, 2013 By Mike L.

SILVIS, Ill. — Jordan Spieth, 19, became the youngest player to win a PGA Tour event in 82 years Sunday. And he did it by surviving a grueling five-hole, sudden-death playoff with defending champion Zach Johnson and David Hearn at the John Deere Classic.

Spieth, who got into the playoff when he holed a bunker shot on the final hole of regulation that he called "the luckiest shot I've ever hit in my life," become the youngest winner since 19-year-old Ralph Guldahl won the Santa Monica Open in 1931.

"I don't know what I did to deserve all those breaks," Spieth said..

Spieth holed a 26-inch putt on the 18th green, the fifth playoff hole, for a win and new status. The former Texas star came to the Deere as a special temporary member. He heads to the British Open as a full-fledged PGA Tour member with a two-year exemption. He's also eligible for the season-ending playoffs. What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Bill Haas at The 2013 AT&T National At Congressional - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

June 30, 2013 By Mike L.

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — Bill Haas won the AT&T National on Sunday and joined some distinguished company.

Haas pulled away from a crowd of contenders with three straight birdies, two key pars and one good hop out of the rough. It led to a 5-under 66 on a muggy day at Congressional and a three-shot win over Roberto Castro.

As many as six players had a share of the lead at some point until Haas rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt on No. 8. Worried about a splotch of mud on his ball, he hit his approach to just inside 12 feet for birdie on the par-5 ninth, and then hit a 5-iron to 10 feet for another birdie on the 10th.

Haas led by at least two shots the entire back nine, though he never allowed himself to think about winning until he stood over a 3-foot par putt on the 18th hole and realized he had three putts to win.

"I just kept the ball in front of me," Haas said. "Nothing too crazy."...Click to Continue Reading This Article

Justin Rose carded an even-par 70 in his final round to win the US Open by two shots from Jason Day and Phil Mickelson who finished runner-up for a sixth time at the tournament.

Rose was helped by consecutive birdies at the par-four 12th and par-three 13th on the challenging Merion Golf Club course on a day when the entire field was struggled for survival in tough, windy conditions.

Fan favourite and birthday boy Mickelson needed to chip for birdie from well off the green on the difficult par-four 18th to force a playoff with Rose but missed to hand the Englishman a maiden major title.

The New Clicgear 3.5+ Golf Push Cart Review - Still The Best And Now Even Better - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

June 12, 2013 By Kevin L.

The first Clicgear Push Cart was introduced in 2007 at the annual PGA Merchandise show in Orlando where it won the "Best New Product" award. I was at that show and I remember the crowd reaction when they first saw the cart. You would have thought that they just invented a new golf club that guaranteed everyone would hit it 300 yards and straight. People couldn't get enough of it and had to get there hands on it as soon as it was available.

From there, the Clicgear cart has continued to improve the cart and it has reached almost a "cult" status where previous model owners will upgrade to the newest model as soon as it is released - even though the cart they have is perfectly fine. In a sense, the Clicgear cart has almost become the Apple iPhone of golf push carts. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

June 3, 2013 By Steve K.

DUBLIN, Ohio — First Scott Stallings came after him. Then Kyle Stanley got into his grill. And Kevin Chappell made things interesting with a late charge.

No matter. Matt Kuchar didn't flinch.

Kuchar and his steady ways joined Tiger Woods as the only multiple winners on the PGA Tour this year with an authoritative final-round, 4-under-par 68 Sunday to win the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village.

And now it's Kuchar, not Woods, who is the hottest player in golf heading into the U.S. Open in two weeks.

Kuchar, who won the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship earlier this year and finished in solo second last week in the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, will rise to No. 4 in the world rankings when they are released Monday. What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Boo Weekley at The 2013 Crowne Plaza Invitational at The Colonial - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

May 26, 2013 By Kevin L.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Boo Weekley was at the 13th hole during the final round of the Colonial before he finally glanced at a leaderboard to see his name on the top.

It was at that par 3 surrounded by an often rowdy crowd that he also heard the loudest "Boo!" in quite some time.

Weekley hit his birdie putt from about 22 feet, then swiped his putter in the air as if guiding the ball into the cup. He thrust the club above his head when the ball dropped to get him to 14 under, where he finished Sunday for his first PGA Tour victory in five years.

"That's when I realized, 'Wow, here I go.' I need to do something, either hold on to it or try to make a couple of more birdies," Weekley said. "I knew I was hitting the ball too well just to hold on." ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

May 20, 2013 By Steve W.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Sang-Moon Bae won the Byron Nelson Championship on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title, beating Keegan Bradley by two strokes after blowing a four-stroke lead.

The 26-year-old South Korean closed with a 1-under 69 to finish at 13-under 267.

Bradley was trying to become the Nelson's first wire-to-wire winner since Tom Watson in 1980. Bradley set the TPC Four Seasons course record with an opening 60 even with two bogeys, but finished with a 72 on a day with wind gusting to near 40 mph at times.

Bae already had 11 international victories — winning on the Korea, Japan and Asian tours.

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Tiger Woods at The 2013 Players Championship - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

May 12, 2013 By David K.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — As the Players Championship wound down Sunday, there were as many compelling stories on the leader board as there were golf balls in the water surrounding the tournament’s signature hole, the par-3 17th.

The players who held at least a share of the final-round lead included Jeff Maggert, a 49-year-old trying to win his fourth PGA Tour event in his 586th start, and David Lingmerth, who had a 74-foot birdie putt to get into his second playoff in 13 tour starts. And there were the headliners and sparring partners, Sergio Garcíaand Tiger Woods, who were separated for the fourth round but tied late in the round.

By the end of the day, the great stories had fallen away and the greatest active player stood alone. Woods, summoning the kind of steely golf that eluded his closest competitors down the stretch, won for the 78th time in 286 tour starts as a professional. On a warm, breezy day, Woods carded a two-under-par 70 for a 72-hole total of 13-under 275, two strokes better than Maggert (70), Lingmerth (72) and Kevin Streelman (67). ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

Our Callaway X Hot Driver Review - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

May 7, 2013 By David K.

When you think of the brand Callaway what's the first thing that normally comes to mind? If you're like most people probably the word "Big Bertha" comes to mind first - their iconic metal wood which revolutionized the metal driver and fairway wood market back in the early 90s'.

The introduction of the Big Bertha launched Callaway Golf to the forefront of golf equipment technology and established them as a leader in metal woods category.

Unfortunately for Callaway, for the past decade, it has lost it's way and for a number of years has had a hard time breaking through the crowded driver/metal woods market which it dominated in the 90's and early 2000s.

That is until now. With new leadership and a new aggressive attitude and marketing campaign Callaway is back and back "Big Time" with its new 2013 offerings. But an aggressive attitude and marketing campaign will only take you so far - you still need the product to perform and boy does the Callaway X Hot driver perform!

CHARLOTTE — In a strange week featuring battered greens, Vijay Singh being cleared of a drug violation by the PGA Tour and a viewer calling in an alleged violation on Sergio Garcia, it was fitting the winner of the Wells Fargo Championship turned out to be Derek Ernst.

He was ranked 1,207th in the world rankings at the start of the week. He was headed to Georgia to play in a Web.com Tour event but turned his car around when he got into the Wells Fargo as the fourth alternate. And then the 22-year-old PGA Tour rookie beat David Lynn in a playoff.

"This feeling is unbelievable right now," said Ernst, who last won in a college tournament last year. "All week long my swing felt good, mental game was good. The big thing was, what I said all week long is, I got out of my own way, and it paid off for now." ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Billy Horschel at The 2013 New Orleans Zurich Classic - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

April 29, 2013 By Kevin L.

AVONDALE, La. -- Billy Horschel sensed the time had come for him to win his first PGA Tour event. This could explain the composure he displayed in the face of two final-round weather delays and a 27-foot putt he had to make on the final hole to avert a playoff.

Horschel tied a course record at the TPC Louisiana with an 8-under 64 in the final round of the Zurich Classic on Sunday, which was good enough to win by one stroke over D.A. Points.

Points put pressure on Horschel by hitting out of a bunker to set up a 5-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th. Then Horschel rolled in his long victory-sealing putt, pumping his arms and letting out a triumphant yell before sinking into a crouch and briefly pulling his cap over his face as the crowd roared. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Graeme McDowell at The 2013 RBC Heritage Open - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

April 22, 2013 By Kevin L.

For all the big moments in Graeme McDowell's career, his resume was short on PGA Tour victories.

McDowell relished what he called his first authentic tour win, defeating fellow U.S. Open champ Webb Simpson in a playoff at the RBC Heritage on Sunday.

McDowell's been at the centre of some of golf's biggest moments, from his rousing triumph at Pebble Beach in 2010 to capturing the winning point for Europe in that year's Ryder Cup matches. He has six European PGA victories, too, but he hadn't triumphed in the weekly grind of the world's top tour.

"This game kicks you more often than it gives you a pat on the back," McDowell said. "It's hard to win." Not on this day for McDowell, who pushed forward on wind-blown Harbour Golf Links when his rivals were moving backward, unnerved by the 20 to 30 mph winds that rattled the course. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Adam Scott at The 2013 Masters Tournament - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

April 15, 2013 By Steve W.

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Adam Scott finished the job this time, and put an end to more than a half-century of Australian misery at the Masters.

With the two biggest putts of his career, Scott holed a 20-footer for birdie on the 18th hole of regulation that put him into a playoff with Angel Cabrera, and then won his first major championship Sunday with a 12-footer for birdie on the second extra hole.

"We like to think we’re the best at everything. Golf is a big sport at home, and this is the one thing in golf we hadn’t been able to achieve," Scott said. "It’s amazing that it’s my destiny to be the first Australian to win. It’s incredible."

Scott leaned back and thrust his arms in the air after the putt dropped on the 10th hole, a celebration for all of Australia and personal redemption for himself.

It was only last summer when Scott threw away the British Open by making bogey on his last four holes to lose by one shot to Ernie Els. The 32-year-old handled that crushing defeat with dignity and pledged to finish stronger given another chance. "Next time -- I’m sure there will be a next time -- I can do a better job of it," he said that day. Scott was close to perfect, and he had to be with Cabrera delivering some brilliance of his own. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Martin Laird at The 2013 Valero Texas Open - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

April 8, 2013 By Steve W.

SAN ANTONIO TX. – Rory McIlroy had struggled enough to lose the world's top ranking, prompting his caddie to suggest playing the Texas Open to get some more preparation in before the Masters.

McIlroy heeded the advice and played his best golf in what has so far been a dreadful start to the season. "I feel like my game's in really good shape going into next week," he said after a final-round 66 on Sunday. "A round like that gives me a nice bit of confidence."

Trouble is he ran into Martin Laird on one of the finest days of the Scotsman's career.

McIlroy and Laird showed an impeccable sense of timing Sunday during a back-nine duel in San Antonio — especially considering it was the final competitive round both will play prior to the first major of the season.

McIlroy knew he was headed to Augusta National before arriving in San Antonio, while Laird didn't.

Laird finally found what he was looking for after six months on the driving range, shooting a course-record 63 in the final round — a bogey-free effort that put him two shots clear of the resurgent McIlroy at 14 under. "I came in here quietly confident, even though my record this year has been poor, to say the least," Laird said. "But golf's a funny game ... doesn't matter what you did two weeks ago. It turns around pretty quickly." ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: D.A. Points at The 2013 Shell Houston Open - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

April 1, 2013 By Kevin L.

HUMBLE, Texas (AP) -- The Masters was always on D.A. Points' mind, even with the start of his year going nowhere. He took care of that with one clutch putt. Points sank a 13-footer to save par on the 72nd hole Sunday, winning the rain-delayed Houston Open by one stroke over Henrik Stenson and Billy Horschel.

Points' only other victory came with actor Bill Murray at his side at Pebble Beach in 2011. This one earned him an invitation to the Masters in two weeks and a two-year exemption, unexpected bonuses after missing seven cuts in his first nine starts this year.

''I never doubt that I can do it,'' Points said. ''I certainly get down and frustrated when I make two of nine cuts. That's not making you feel real great about yourself.''

No matter how he played in Houston, he was planning to play in next week's Texas Open, too. Now, at least he won't have to worry about winning there.

''I never thought that I wasn't going to make it (to Augusta),'' Points said. ''I just thought this is an opportunity, just like next week.'' ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

Our Review Of The Nike VR_S Covert Driver - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

March 26, 2013 By Kevin L.
I predict 2013 will be the year of the “Driver” in golf. As golfers, we are blessed with a lot of choices this year and the golf equipment manufacturers went all out in designing what they hope will be a top-selling driver for 2013.

Now I have to admit that most of the new drivers have only incremental changes from the previous year. This includes maybe a minor tweak in head design, weight and COG placement, club head color and shaft offerings. But this year, Nike takes the crown for the most radical changes to their driver line with the new Nike VR_S Covert Driver. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Tiger Woods at The 2013 Arnold Palmer Invitational - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

March 25, 2013 By Brian W.
Orlando, Fla. – He's back — atop the world golf rankings.

Tiger Woods, who has spent 623 weeks at No. 1 in the world, will return to the top spot for the first time in 29 months after his victory Monday in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. Woods held off Rickie Fowler and Justin Rose in the continuation of the final round, which was halted Sunday when wind, rain and lightning forced a suspension of play. Woods and Fowler had played two holes Sunday, and Woods led by three shots when they teed off at No. 3 on Monday. Fowler kept the pressure on on the back nine, until he knocked two balls in the water on the par-5 16h on his way to a triple bogey. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Kevin Streelman at The 2013 Tampa Bay Championship - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

March 17, 2013 By Kevin L.
PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Kevin Streelman was ready to abandon his hopes of playing on the PGA Tour, and even that didn't go right.

After two years of plodding through the mini-tours, he noticed a job opening as the assistant golf coach at Duke, his alma mater. Streelman was one of two finalists for the position, and he even went to North Carolina to interview.

It went to the other guy.

And that's when his fortunes started to change, thanks to a chance meeting 10 years ago with a Masters champion.

"I remember I got told Friday I didn't get the job," Streelman said. "My dad gave me $400 to play the qualifier for the Western Open, I made a long putt on the last hole to get in and on the next day I'm in the locker room. And Mike Weir's locker is next to mine."

He nervously asked Weir if they could play a practice round together. Weir showed him how to use the yardage book and all the other nuances of playing on the PGA Tour. Streelman missed the cut, but saw enough out of Weir to figure out where he needed to get better, and to realize his game really wasn't as far off as he imagined. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

Golf Shoe Battle: Adidas Adizero Tour vs Nike TW '13 - Great Golf Deals Blog

March 13, 2013 By Kevin L.
These aren't your Granddad’s golf shoes.

In the past, golf shoes were more like dress shoes with either a saddle or wing-tip design, with hard leather soles and spikes. While I admit they did look good, they just were not that functional and were definitely not fun to walk in.

Today’s golf shoes have come full circle by taking clues from the casual and athletic shoe market. The new rage in the marketplace is the “spikeless” golf shoe that can be worn on or off the course. They have been taking the industry by storm because they are so comfortable and multi-functional. It would seem that spiked shoes are going by the wayside. But this year with 2 new spiked shoe offerings from Adidas and Nike these new shoes are going to give the spikeless golf shoes a run for their money. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Tiger Woods at The 2013 WGC Cadillac Championship - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

March 10, 2013 By Mike L.

DORAL, FLA.

Tiger Woods is hitting his stride on a march to the Masters.

Woods had full control of his game Sunday and never let anyone get closer than three shots until he had locked up his 17th World Golf Championship title. With a conservative bogey that didn't matter on the final hole, he closed with a 1-under 71 to win the Cadillac Championship.

It was one year ago at Doral that Woods withdrew after 11 holes in the final round because of tightness in his left Achilles tendon, creating uncertainty about his health and whether he could ever get his game back.

False alarm.

Woods has won five times in the last year, the most of anyone in the world, and he can return to No. 1 with a win at Bay Hill in two weeks. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

Our Review of the Cobra AMP CELL Driver - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

March 3, 2013 By Dave K.

2013 is tuning out to be the year of the adjustable driver and Cobra does not disappoint with its latest offerings.  Cobra's latest driver line is named the AMP Cell which includes MyFly technology in the hosel combined with the SmartPad technology in the sole.  While these new terms may sound perplexing, it is really straightforward.  There are 6 different loft settings in the MyFly adjustable hosel. Each loft setting works without needing to do anything else to the club as a result of "SmartPad" sole technology.  This keeps the club square at address regardless of what loft setting you select.  What Cobra offers this year that no one else does is a choice of 4 fresh colors: orange, blue, red or silver to customize your driver.   (Women have a couple of other options, plus an offset model in yet another color that matches the baffler set). ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Michael Thompson Winner At The Honda Classic - 2013 - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

March 2, 2013 By Keven L.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — The cold wind that buffeted the Honda Classic left a trail of debris. It creased the shiny image of the world No. 1, Rory McIlroy, who abruptly gave up the defense of his title in the middle of the second round. It whipped Tiger Woods, the world No. 2, like a pin flag. By Sunday’s conclusion, the leader board was so topsy-turvy that it produced a winner who had finished dead last in the field in his previous start.
“The Northern Trust was a good thing in my life,” Thompson said. “It allowed me to focus on what I needed to do to play like I did this week.”

The missed cut was Thompson’s third in four starts. With two months of the shortened 2013 season gone, he had made $10,919, which was not enough to cover his expenses. Upon returning to his home in Birmingham, Ala., Thompson spoke with his wife, Rachel, and his longtime swing coach, Susan Berdoy Meyers. He shared with them his worst fear: that he wouldn’t make another cut this year and would lose his PGA Tour playing privileges. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag :Matt Kuchar Winner At The WGC - Accenture Match Play Tournament 2013 - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

February 25, 2013 By Keven L.

MARANA, Ariz. — The desert weather was capricious, delivering snow on the first day and biting 30-mile-an-hour wind gusts on the last. Then there was the format at the Accenture Match Play Championship, which produced several winners so unpredictable the best way to pick them was out of a hat.

Conquering the most fickle of tournaments was a player known for his constancy. Matt Kuchar, owner of an unchanging swing, an unshakable smile and an unflappable game, handed the defending champion, Hunter Mahan, a 2-and-1 defeat in the final Sunday at Dove Mountain. It was the first All-American championship match since Tiger Woods defeated Stewart Cink, 8 and 7, in 2008. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag : John Merrick Winner At The Northern Trust Open 2013 - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

February 18, 2013 By Dave S.

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — From the tee box, the 10th hole at Riviera Country Club looks like another vanilla par 4 on the PGA Tour, a 315-yard test that is no match for today’s generation of swashbuckling players.

John Merrick after his victory in the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club. He said, "To get a win in my hometown, it’s amazing, it’s a dream come true."

Bill Haas, the third-round leader at Riviera Country Club, wound up missing a playoff by one shot and tying for third. The hole, and the player who tamed it to win the Northern Trust Open, are proof that looks can be deceiving. Before Sunday, John Merrick might have been hard for the average golf fan to pick out in a threesome waiting to tee off. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article

This is an industry show so only people in the industry and media are invited to attend. This year's show took place January 23 through January 26th at the Orange County Convention Center. Tiger Woods is a winner again at Torrey Pines, and the only question Monday was how long it would take him to finish.

Woods stretched his lead to eight shots in the Farmers Insurance Open before losing his focus and his patience during a painfully slow finish by the group ahead.

Rory McIlroy Struggles In First Competitive Round With New Nike Equipment - Great Golf Deals.com Blog

January 17, 2013 By Kevin L.
After the first competitive round using his new Nike equipment, Rory may be asking himself why he made the changes. Rory shot a 3 over 75 that comprised of a lot of wild shots and several double bogeys including one where his drive ended up in a parking lot.

Not surprisingly, McIlroy put his struggles down to "rustiness" rather than anything equipment based. But he did acknowledge that adjusting to his new clubs was an ongoing process.

"My problems were more swing-related than club-related," he insisted. "Whenever the wind was right-to-left I was comfortable enough cutting the ball into it. But when it was blowing the other way I had trouble releasing the shot properly....Click to Continue Reading This Article

TaylorMade RocketBallz RBZ Driver - To Bond or Not To Bond?

October 31, 2012 by Kevin L.
If you are like me, you might have been curious when you found out TaylorMade Golf was adding an additional model to the highlly succesfful RocketBallz driver line. The most recent offering is referred to as the RocketBallz "Bonded" Driver, and if you’re asking yourself why the “bonded” name, you’re not alone. Basically, the new RBZ Driver is a fixed hosel version of the original RBZ Driver. Therefore, the club head is actually “bonded” or glued to the shaft and cannot be adjusted like the original. If that sounds like a step backwards to you, given the adjustability popularity that has taken over the driver category this season and figures to continue through 2013, you may be half right. There’s nothing especially “new” here....Click to Continue Reading This Article

TaylorMade's New RocketBladez Irons - Revolutionary or Evolutionary?

October 24, 2012 by Mike L.
TaylorMade announced today what it is labelling "a once-in-a-lifetime innovation within the iron category" when the company officially introduced RocketBladez, an iron that claims to promote high launching, long and straight performance for all golfers.

The crucial element to RocketBladez irons is called Speed Pocket, which is taken directly from the highly succesfful RocketBallz fairways woods and rescue clubs. What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Tommy Gainey at the 2012 McGladrey Classic

October 22, 2012 by Kevin L.
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. Winning on the PGA Tour is what Tommy Gainey dreamed about when he held a job wrapping insulation around hot water tanks, when he was playing more mini-tours than he can remember, when he was taking part in a Golf Channel reality series where he was best known as the guy wearing two gloves.

"Two Gloves" never imagined his first win would unfold the way it did Sunday at Sea Island.

Seven shots behind going into the final round of the McGladrey Classic, Gainey came within one putt of a 59, and then had to wait more than two hours as David Toms, Jim Furyk and tournament host Davis Love III — who have combined for 49 wins, three majors and 17 Ryder Cup teams — tried to catch him....Click to Continue Reading This Article

September 9, 2012 by Kevin L.
As Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh stalked their putts on the 18th green, Rory McIlroy stood outside the scoring trailer scrolling through his congratulatory messages. McIlroy, ranked No. 1 in the world, had secured his second title in two weeks and his third in his last four starts with a two-stroke victory in the BMW Championship. Among the first texts he retrieved on his smartphone was one from the tennis superstar Rafael Nadal, who wrote, “Well done.”

McIlroy, 23, is in the kind of zone known to only the rarest of athletes. Nadal, an 11-time Grand Slam champion, has been there, and so has Tiger Woods, the last golfer to win in back-to-back weeks on the PGA Tour, in August 2009....Click to Continue Reading This Article

What's In The Winner's Golf Bag: Nick Watney at the 2012 Barclays Championship

August 26, 2012 by Mike S.

Another week, another lost player found his way back to the winner’s circle. Welcome to golf’s great summer revival, a traveling exhibition of born-again careers. On Sunday, Nick Watney became the latest prodigal putter when he closed with a two-under-par 69 at the Black Course at Bethpage State Park for a 72-hole total of 10-under 274 for a three-stroke victory over Brandt Snedeker at the Barclays, the opening leg of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs.

Watney, a two-time winner last year, wrapped up his first title in 13 months with a 10-foot birdie on the final green, his faith in his putting restored by a Long Island club professional who tweaked his setup during a lesson at the beginning of the tournament week. A simple weight transfer, from Watney’s heels to the balls of his feet, was all it took for him to rebound. ...Click to Continue Reading This Article
